Swede a threat to city

Keepa close watch on Swede Magnus Hansson. That's my advice to Gisborne Gold City, who play third-from-bottom Port Hill United in the Pacific Premiership here tomorrow. Since joining Port Hill this season, Hansson has gone from strength to strength and is the premiership's top goal-scorer with 13 to his credit, including two hat-tricks. He has been the answer to coach Tim Claudatos's early-season problems as he has sparked new life into the sputtering Port Hill season.
Last week, 27-year-old Hansson, who played to the highest level as a junior in Sweden, notched a hat-trick against mid-table Taradale. Claudatos, playing a major role in the Port Hill revival this season, said that after a halftime blackboard session, they put pressure on the Taradale defence and it paid off as his side fought back from being three goals down to snatch a 3-3 draw. But City coach Richard Mulligan will not be taking this one for granted. The Sky Blues have played nine, won six, drawn one, lost two, scored 24 goals and conceded 12 to put them in joint second place on 19 points, with Napier Marist and Havelock North Wanderers.
Port Hill have won two, drawn three, lost six, scored 28 and conceded 28 for nine points.City, on their day, are certainly good enough to worry any team in the league. They are well-balanced with plenty of pace up front, where the Kieran Ryan-David Salmon combination get more dangerous with every outing. There is plenty of menace on the flanks, where Rory White and Max Logan often switch wings effectively as they are both comfortable on either right or left.
Skipper Shane Hooks is having an outstanding season in central midfield, where both Michael Smith and Scott Hales add bite and experience when they are available.City's defence of keeper Sean Turner and the back four of Aaron Walters, Kieran Koia, Bevan Owen and Caleb Duncan are probably the youngest rearguard in the league, one of the best and still improving. It all adds up to a game worth watching.
LJ Hooker Gisborne Thistle hit the road again tomorrow to play Taradale, a game the Jags could win. Although beaten 2-0 last week by league leaders Napier City Rovers Seconds, the Jags gave a good account of themselves. From a spectator's viewpoint, it was a great afternoon's entertainment with two evenly-balanced sides competing strongly for the full 90 minutes. Napier showed just why they are unbeaten in the league this season.
Their young players all showed tremendous potential and coach Matt Chandler has schooled them into a hard-working combination who use the ball quickly and accurately. Every player in their side looked capable of doing a job at the higher levels of the game. And in their veterans, centreback Jon Taylor and striker Chris McIvor, they had two players who have always been, and still are, a credit to the game. But Thistle were always in the game and this fighting spirit should stand them in good stead tomorrow.
